Baby’s first Lunar New Year!

Happy Lunar New Year to anybody who celebrates it! It’s a bit bittersweet this year, because this is a really important day in my (Vietnamese) culture, and it would’ve been even more special since it’s Goober’s (my baby) first new year. However, due to COVID, we’re not gathering.

Being in a mixed race relationship, my hubs and I want to make sure Goober gets exposure to both traditions and cultures. Funnily enough, I never wore traditional clothes growing up. In fact, the only time I wore an ao dai (Vietnamese traditional long dress) was for my cousin’s wedding. However, I couldn’t resist (and the hubs encouraged) me buying an ao dai for baby Goob.

Boy’s ao dai. To be worn with pants

We’re going to stop by for a driveway hi and surprise my parents with Goob in his traditional clothes this weekend. Today , we’re stopping by my cousin to give them li xi (lucky money/red envelopes) to his two daughters. While sad that we’re not all gathering, we’re trying to celebrate anyway!

Wishing everybody the best in the year of the ox, and hopefully we can all be with family and friends the next new year’s celebration. Trying to start the traditions in our small family, regardless if it won’t be the same next year!
