I recently started trying a new thing called Lunchclub. The idea is that an AI would match you based on topics you select and other information you provide to people that match those interests.
As an introvert, I find networking a necessary evil. I know it’s important for my professional life, but the idea of going to events and meeting a whole bunch of people with the underlying intent of making business connections is horrifying for me. I feel so out of my comfort zone; and honestly, there are some industry networking events where I’ve decided I DON’T want to be part of that industry because people seem so arrogant and insular. It’s also a ton of small talk, which I hate as an introvert. So, when I received the invite for Lunchclub, I was a little hesitant but figured I’d give it a try.

Originally, the intent is that they match you with people locally, who you could meet up with in person. With COVID, they moved to an online platform, which I enjoy better. It’s easier for my busy schedule, and it opens the door to meeting people around the world. So far, I’ve met with two people, and I have to say, I really do like it. I’m not sure if I’m willing to commit to it more than once a week (or even that often), but I do want to continue.
The first person I met was from Melbourne, Australia. They matched more based on our professions, and it was really interesting to discuss our work and how differently our countries were addressing and viewing the pandemic. The second was from LA and I think we matched more on our interests. They were both really easy to talk to, and I enjoyed the hour I spent with both. Will it help my career? Probably not (at least not yet), but it helped me go outside of my box and it was great meeting people. Even better, it wasn’t really the usual small talk!
