So, I like to get used or hand me down toys (and clothes) for my baby for a variety of reasons – mostly because I never know what will actually interest him and those toys add up! Some toys I get from generous coworkers and family and friends. Others, I pick up from my local Buy Nothing group. Though they’re generally in good condition, sometimes you need to clean or fix them up a bit.
This hack is for toys that need batteries. Ever have an item where the place the battery is suppose to make contact with the toy is too loose – because something was wrong with the spring, or whatever other reason? Before trying to weld or throw away the item (for us it was a small electronic drum set and our motion activated trashcan), here’s quick tip. Use aluminum foil, folded up to the thickness you need and put it between the contact and battery. It’ll close that gap but, since it’s aluminum, will still conduct electricity as needed.
Now you can use the toy another day! Word of caution – I’m not sure if I would really recommend it in a super expensive piece of electronics or equipment. It shouldn’t cause issues, but just in case…!
