So an ex-coworker of mine recently bought a house and asked for tips from other homeowners. I couldn’t think of anything too major off the top of my head, butt somebody else mentioned something that made me go “oh yeah!” – labeling the breaker box.
It might seem silly, but if you ever need to check on something electrical or turn off the electricity in a room to do work, it will make your life so much easier! When we bought our house, the previous owner(s) did attempt to label the box. Then with renovations (or whatever other reason), some of them ended up being wrong. So we had to go through and check them all again. What we did was basically go room by room – usually with a light on or an eye on something electronic in the room. I was outside with the label machine, my hubs was inside to let me know when the electricity was off – we were communicating by cell so we didn’t have to yell through open windows or keep walking back and forth. Once hubs confirmed, I would label the breaker.
Extra step, but totally worth it – we bought this socket tester and actually tested that each socket didn’t have electricity when we checked the breaker. Honestly, took us less than an hour, but when we do home projects (like installing ceiling fans/lights – it simplifies life and saves time!). While I had a label maker (because I’m OCD like that- but really because my handwriting sucks), masking tape and Sharpie will work too.
