I’ve only traveled internationally about three times (not including Canada and Mexico). I’ve learned a few things along the way that might be helpful to someone newly traveling.
First – check your passport’s expiration date. Some places won’t accept/let you in if it’s within a couple months of expiration. It generally is easy enough to renew – I took a new picture and renewed by mail last time!
Then, make a photocopy of your passport – specifically the page with your photo and information. I keep a copy on my phone and a printed copy. When I travel, I generally keep my passport hidden in a safe place (in my hotel or otherwise), and only bring the paper copy with me, in case I get robbed along the way. I also register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, which allows you to enroll with local US embassies and consulates while abroad. It’ll notify you of any dangers in that country too, while you’re there. We got a notification while in Spain about some unrest, so we were extra vigilant.
Hide your important items (passport, extra money, etc.) if you’re going to leave it in your hotel room for the day. Seems self explanatory. When I do travel from city to city, we have our important documents, money, etc. in a fanny pack, under our clothes. Generally, though, my role of thumb is, don’t bring anything you wouldn’t mind losing.
Which is what I told my hubs (then boyfriend) before our first international trip together. He seemed so worried about theft (which is how we got the fanny pack). Asked about travel insurance – I said no, because I feel like it’s more trouble than it’s worth to fight to get anything reimbursed.. Just don’t bring anything you don’t mind losing! Of course, unknown to me, he was bringing an engagement ring to propose. After he proposed, I went “oh that’s why you were so paranoid about getting robbed!” Response: “yes, and now it’s your problem!”
Random other thought/tip from my coworker who also wanted to propose on an international trip – he bought a cheaper (rubber) ring to propose with, and left the expensive one at home. Less stress!
