Fixing Garage Doors that Won’t Close and other tips

I, apparently, am now the garage fixer in the family. We’ve had issues in the past with the garage door not working. It would start rolling down, but then roll back up.

If it starts to close, but rolls back up and the light ont he garage motor blinks several times, this means that something’s blocking (or is wrong with the sensor). The sensors I have, you can adjust by loosening and tightening the wing nuts on them. Apparently, it’s really easy – if the light on the sensors aren’t on or are blinking, then the sensors aren’t aligned or something is in the way. Simple, right? Unfortunately not the issue this time.

If it starts to close, rolls back up, and the light on the garage motor doesn’t blink, this is possibly an issue with the force on the garage door. You can use a flathead to adjust it (very slightly – instructions here). Be careful that you never adjust it to max force. This was the problem this time! Thank goodness, because I didn’t want to deal with finding a new garage door opener! I think what happened was that when it didn’t work, we were opening and closing the door manual too many times and caused a problem with the force and had to adjust it.

Also, fun fact, if the electricity goes out, you won’t be able to open or close the garage. You can close it manually! Basically there’s a latch on the pulley you can pull down, then just manually roll the door up or down. to connect it to the motor again, click the latch back up and press the garage door opener and it’ll move and latch back on to the pulley/motor.

Last tip – do you maybe don’t want to have the default garage door opener that comes with the garage? Maybe because you don’t want to leave it in the car or whatever other reason? They sell ones that you can attach to a key ring! So much more convenient sometimes, especially if you might park outside but still want to go through the garage.

Hope any of this helps!
