First Trimester – You’re not going to see me, doc?

Something I learned when I got pregnant is that apparently, doctors don’t bother seeing you until you’re about 10 weeks pregnant (or almost done with the first trimester)! For a first time mom, this was SHOCKING. I had so many questions, and you weren’t even going to see me until the end? Plus, isn’t the first trimester the scary, high risk time? I need to know what I could do to protect my baby!

What I got was a “Congrats!” pamphlet with information I could read. Yeah, I could email my doctor/nurse practitioner, but it wasn’t the same. In my head, they would usually call you in and confirm your pregnancy, but nope. Only in books/movies apparently.

I think that makes it even more important to find mom groups and join them early. The ones I’m in allowed for questions anonymously (if you didn’t want to make it obvious you were pregnant or felt you were asking a “stupid” question), and people are so supportive. I wish I found them earlier! Of course, I could read books or articles, but there’s something reassuring about talking to a supposed expert in person versus reading something second hand. Yeah, I could tell my mom and get her input, but 1. things could change in three decades, and 2. I didn’t want to get her hopes up if the baby didn’t make it. Morbid thoughts, I know, but I couldn’t help it.

So, for any new moms out there who aren’t ready to share with the world yet their news, but are anxious and your doctor isn’t seeing you any time soon – pregnancy books and mom groups!
