Being a parent means constantly second guessing yourself

I’m not sure if all moms do this, but I definitely do. I find myself constantly second guessing any decision or action I do as a first time mom. It doesn’t help when you decide to do something (and didn’t think it needed researching) only to find out that it could cause problems!

For example, did you know that sippy cups could cause speech problems, depending on which ones you use? I’m not 100% sure on the details of all the research, so please do your own, but supposedly sippy cups are more for the convenience of the parents than to help the baby learn to use a cup. Certain ones may be ok to use, such as the Munchkin 360 cups, or the ones with straws, but hard to say. I only found this out after I already got my baby on the Munchkin 360 cups. And now I’m constantly monitoring his speech to see if it’s delayed. I feel horrible!

Another thing – no baby walkers! The American Association of Pediatricians said they tend to be a safety hazard and may possibly stunt the muscle/leg development that babies need to learn to walk. I feel like they’re so prevalent! Luckily, my pediatrician had this in a packet before I put my baby in one. Also luckily, we didn’t spend mone on one – we got it as a hand me down. I quickly gave ours away so I wouldn’t be tempted.

The same with baby jumpers. Did you know they could possibly cause hip problems later on in the baby because of the high impact?

But beyond all these examples, I find myself second guessing everything else. Am I feeding him enough? Too much? Am I disciplining him enough, or is he too young to understand? Should I do this? Or that? Honestly, if you’re a parent, I think you need to learn to forgive yourself. You WILL make mistakes. You WILL do things you regret. And it’ll suck. A lot. But I like to think that all the worrying and second guessing just means you’re doing your best to be a great parent. Don’t let people shame you for your mistakes when you ddin’t know better. And you know what? If that walker or sippy cup makes your life easier because you need that extra help, go for it. Just make sure to be careful (safety wise) with the walker!
